Kicking your goals: Learn about team building from Queensland's latest sporting wins

Team Building Lessons from Brisbane's Sporting Triumphs

After the 3 Brisbane wins there is no doubt that Brisbane is the sporting capital of Australia. All teams demonstrated outstanding levels of skill, determination and team effort to achieve their victories. Whether you are a premiership winning team or a small business team, there is something can be taken away from each victory. Let’s have a look into the team building lessons we can learn from the recent sporting wins:

NRL Broncos: Comeback

The Broncos victory against the Melbourne Storm, saw an end to the 19-year premiership drought. The team was down 10 points entering the second half of the game, but through an amazing team effort they were able to stay focussed and pull through. Let’s have a look into what we can take from the nail bitting 4-point victory.

The team had worked so hard all year, but they didn’t let them being down at half time waiver their focus or moral. They maintained focus for the entirety of the game and finished strong.

Being down at halftime doesn’t mean all of your hard work is down the drain. You must keep pushing. Remember, having a ‘halftime’ doesn’t mean you are giving up, rather taking time to re-assess the situation at hand. Maintaining that focus and not letting prior upsets disturb your work flow is crucial. So, instead of feeling defeated from one small setback, take a half-time break and continue to finish the year off strong.

Brisbane Lions: Teamwork

The back-to-back premiership winners: The Brisbane Lions

The Broncos NRL win was not the only triumphant victory of the season. The Brisbane Lions smashed the Cats in a 122 - 75 win, securing their second straight premiership title. So what is it about the Lions that lead them to win 2 consecutive years?

Blend of youth and experience

From 18 year olds to 30 year olds the Lions team is made up from a wide ranged of new and experienced players. Having this diverse range allows them to constantly learn and grow from each other. The new blood on the team brings a new level of energy, determination and maybe even some new skills. The more experienced players can pass on knowledge and wisdom that is only gained through lived experience.

This is an example of effective team building; no matter the experience or age gap, the Lions were still able to work together harmoniously to achieve a victory. It is important to keep a open mind and be ready to learn new skills when working on a team of varying levels of experience. Everyone has a chance to share their unique knowledge and learn something new.

NRLW: Perseverance and Determination

The try that scored the NRLW Broncos’ first Premiership in 5 years

A last minute try in the 65th minute saw the NRLW Broncos secure their first premiership win since 2020, not to mention putting an ending to the undefeated run of the Roosters. The Broncos were up 12-0 in the first half of the game but the Roosters weren’t done yet. Three tries in the space of 10 minutes quickly flip the scales. The Broncos were down with 17 minutes left, but through perseveration and determination the team had one more try left in them. The last minute try by Mele Hufanga brought the win home from Brisbane.

This win can teach us a lot too.

Even though the team was ahead coming into the second half they still had to stay focussed and perverse right till the very end. Not giving up right to the last second demonstrate how every ounce of effort counts. If you are loosing steam and motivation towards the end of the year, it is important to remember to keep focussed it give it everything you’ve got.

Another important lesson from the NRLW Broncos win was the team putting an end to the Roosters undefeated season. Just because a team has been undefeated does not mean they are unbeatable. Remaining determined right until the end, no matter what you are facing, is an invaluable skill.

Team Building Lessons

These three wins for Brisbane teams are not only sport related but extend to the whole city of Brisbane, boosting moral, motivation and pride for Brisbane based companies. The comeback win from the maintained spirit and determination from the Broncos, taught us to never give up. The diverse team of the Lions demonstrates that everybody can always learn something new. And the NRLW Broncos never taking their foot of the gas, showed us it ain’t over till it’s over and to stay focussed. Building a team effectively will see these attributes shine through.

Here at FONSEKA we are taking these valuable team victory lessons and applying them to our workflow and team spirit so no matter the project, we can follow suit from the Brisbane teams.
